We are
the Parents of Children with Autism who spent
many panicked and lonely nights searching the
web for helpful information. Finding
more frustration than insight, we decided to
pave the way for others who would walk our
path.
We do
not claim to be experts, but as we find
something that we think is helpful, we will
put it on the site. If you have been to
many of our pages, you have seen our
disclaimer. Read it. Take it to
heart. Really.
We do
not include any personal information to
protect our children from the tiny percentage
of the population who would exploit
them.
Maybe. Email us a link to your site
and we will take a look at it when we get a
minute. If we like what we see, we'll
stick your link on Linda's Link page. We
rarely link to a commercial site on request of
that site's owner, but have occasionally made
exceptions when the product(s) offered were of
exceptional interest to us. And, as
Untangle Autism! is a private entity, we are
the final judges of what we like.
It changes by the moment. As do our
children. We really wish there was a
magic cure (at any price, it would be cheap)
but each child reacts differently to the
various methods we use to ameliorate the
symptoms of Autism.
If your child is under 3 years of age,
contact the Early Intervention program in your
state. (Look at Local Links for contact
information.) If you child is 3 or
older, seek services through your local Child
Find office. A call to your local
Department of Education should get you on your
way.
If you live in an area where the powers
that be are reticent to give kids their
entitled services, get in touch with your
local Parent Training and Information
center. These programs have various
names, but are federally mandated.
For more specific information about your
area, put in a call to your local chapter of
the Autism
Society of America.
Each of those folks were instrumental in
getting Untangle Autism! off of the
ground. We literally couldn't have done
this without them. Outsourcers
generously underwrites our URL, TRACI donates
our server space and answers tons of web-newbie
questions for us, and Tangle Toys gives
generously to us and our kids. All
three have been with us since the very
beginning and have never said,
"No." "What
now??" from time to time... but never,
"No!."
We, of course, strongly encourage you to
visit their sites. Not because we get
some great kick-backs, but because these are
genuinely kind people who will do a great job
helping you out in the particular areas in
which they are primo experts.
Well. Hmmmm. That all
depends.
So far, only the folks at the Maplehurst
Inn have been able to
impress us with reason enough to add a
"banner" sponsor since we went
live. (See the Calendar
page.) Sonny and Becky Harben go above
and beyond in so many ways. We
especially appreciate the kindness they have
shown to the groups who have used their inn
for trainings and conferences. If you do
choose to visit the Maplehurst while in
Knoxville, please share a "Hello!"
from us.
So, it isn't impossible. It is
sort of a what-comes-around-goes-around
system.
While it is very easy to cut
and paste content from one site to another, we
really would prefer you give credit where
credit is due. Link back to us, or even
directly to the page where the coveted info is
located.
If you really desperately
neeeeed the info we have on a particular page,
please email us and we will see what we can
do. We would rather work something out
than force you into plagiarism.
If what you are seeking is a
copy of our actual format, please visit Diane
and purchase one of her beautiful designs.
Not
likely. But neither do we. There
is a lot to learn about Autism and all of the
related implications of the diagnosis.
Chin up, though. Some of the things that
are baffling to you right now will become
second nature to you. You may even
decide to create a website, go on tour
speaking, open up a consulting business, start
a support group, help another parent through a
tricky stage, or write a book on the
topic. Hard to imagine? Well, we
all have to start somewhere. It truly is
a journey. Take it one step at a
time.
